Shannon Burns

Shannon Burns
Forest Preserve Commissioner of Dupage County

Shannon Burns has a Bachelors in Social Work, a Masters Degree in Business Association, and a Doctorate Certificates in Natural Resource Managements. After originally growing up in Rockford, Illinois she moved to Joliet and eventually Dupage County.

Shannon Burns is a Democrat. She never missed voting in an election ever since the 1960 election. Her Democratic Ideology developed while growing up in the turbulent 1960's. She remembers growing up in the civil rights era, when her high school admitted 16 black students but the Bishops of the school advised the students not to mingle with them. She remembers talking to her parents about the issue and them agreeing with the bishops. As early as high school, the belief that poor people have different issues with achieving success also help determine this. She became a strong believer that social programs are necessary in helping these people achieve success. Indeed, the 60's impacted her views on America for life and changed her beliefs.

As Forest Preserve Commissioner she puts about 25 hours a week in. The hours long meetings discuss a wide variety of things, from helping people get beavers to not eat their trees, to determining mulimillion dollar land deals. She is also a Vice Chair of Legislative Committee where she works to look at policy that effects forest preservation.

Shannon's democratic ideology affected her opinion especially when she was assigned to investigate whether horses at a native equestrian center were being mistreated or not. There were allegations that the horses were not given enough food and were being beaten. It is believed that she was assigned the issue not to be reelected, since it was very difficult to solve. However she still was reelected and made changes that definitely improved the quality of life for the horses.

Shannon strongly believes in the importance of preservation of the environment. As a Sierra Club Member, she collects river water to check the quality of it. She believes clean water will definitely become a crisis. She also believes that our local Dupage Government should work to protect our environment, also continue to fund storm management and other programs.

Overall Shannon Burns is definitely an excellent public worker, and deserves to be recognized for her contributions to the community.
